Naming your bike?Elefantino

While just writing about obsession a minute ago, I glanced over at my reborn 5200, new paint job and all just waiting for me to ride again, and I wondered:
Do people name their bikes anymore?

I call mine Gretchen; it's a University thing that has just stuck when I name any inanimate objects. Hey my computer and car are also called Gretchen :)...

Most healthy people stopped naming their bikes after the age of 11.

Don't know; heard it when I was in Austin for RFTR in April. Might be a good question to ost on the message board at his Web site.

I sort of was shying away from this but I think I WILL name my bike either Fred or, didn't Mr. mcgoo have a name for his car? If I could find that out that would be it.
Well, I have a Klein, so it only goes to follow...DT

...that I name it Gary. "Gary's itching to go for a ride, sweetheart!", "Gary's gonna get wet if you don't come pick me up from work in the rain!" :o) "Gary's gonna kick your bike's ass!"

I do like my bike alot, but I just figured out my bikes name must be sh!t. At least two different times today I was talking to my bike and called it sh!t. The first was when I was being chased by a dog. I said " oh sh!t hurry up". The second was going down a hill with a turn at the bottom. The front wheel felt a little loose and I said " oh shit hang on". At least sh!t is a good listener.

When I was 10 (1953) a friend got a new 3 speed hub shifter, he let me ride it and I was overwhelmed, had to have one. My mother arranged for me to buy a new red English light weight 3 speed from the local Western Auto store to be payed for from my paper route money, $7.50/month, 6 months. That bike became my best friend and I named it "Lightwing". In those days most bikes were single speed tanks and Lightwing could outrun them. In 1998 I bought a bike I decided was good enough to bear the name "Lightwing II". But this is the first time I've told anyone my bike has a name. My commuter bike, a 22" '78 lugged steel Trek is named "Little Blackie" for the little black mare in the movie "True Grit". Of course bikes should have names.
