I am so excited, new Brooks saddleDog

I finally received the final component for the full restoration of my 1980 Bianchi - a Brooks saddle. Just came in, and my is it gorgeous. Black Swift with big copper rivets. But, I did cheat and got the version with Ti rails. I just couldn't help it.

Now to break the darn thing in...

If it's like my Swallow, there's no break in. It will comfortable right from the start.

How tight should the tensioner be? Is it better to have it a little less tight at first? Thanks.

I heard you should be very careful of using the tensioner, but others say to actually loosen it about 1/4 turn to help break it in. I have both a B17 and a Conquest. I haven't touched the tensioner on either one.

As you are facing the nose of the saddle, clockwise is tighter, counter is looser. Never go more than 1/4 turn in either direction in one sitting.

That is my only advice. Harris cyclery (sheldonbrown.com) recommends never touching the tensioner.

Well you have to get a pinch of wolfsbane, pick it under a full moon and then sacrifice a virgin to get the seat JUST RIGHT!
so, where's the virgin? nmDog

... As a trucker once told me after backing his semi up to the loading dock in our too-small parking lot:

"If I could find a woman that tight, I'd MARRY her."

Probably a virgin.

I did nothing except the obligatory initial proof hide.

Do you ever just stop riding, get off the bike, and smell the leather? Damn I love the smell of leather. I don't actually stop riding, but at home when I'm cleaning my bikes, I certainly take pleasure in the scent.

Let me get this straight... You smell bike seats? Do you know what's been sitting on those?
Sad I know...UncleMoe

It is a bad habit, but I only smell my own saddles, unless I see a really nice Brooks on another bike and no one is looking. Awww, they smell sooo good.
I wonder how one would look on the cruiser ...Humma Hah

... I'm happy with my present seat, but it already has a replacement vinyl cover, and won't last forever. A Brooks would be a neat retro touch.

Same goes if I ever find that elusive Paramount. I'm sure glad Brooks is still in business.

I'd pick one for the cruiser with springs:

... Paramount of similar vintage to the cruiser, circa 1971-72? Preferably with chromed lugs? Rigged as a fixie? I'd think that would be the right saddle for it!

What would be your objection? (Just curious, I've never owned a Brooks).

An ugly boat anchor that requires regular maintenence and you havee to keep it out of the rain! Ahhh hate Brooks!

Sort of like needing redline tires on a '60's Vette. Don't ride it much, anyway.

Ive been breaking in my team pro for a week now. Have to say it was comfy from the get go and is getting better. 2 nice wear spots were my bones sit. Plus it looks cool on the shark. Picked it up at performance for $42. I have not touched the tension yet, still feels firm. Used Mink oil to help with break in and to give a little water proofing. So far so good.

I need a B17 for my Raleigh Sports, but I think I might have trouble sneeking that by my wife (Saddle would cost several times more than the bike).
