|Another "My New Rollers" Story||LLSmith|

|I have missed several rides lately due to weather, work,daylight,etc. I decided to order my rollers so I would be ready to make up the next missed ride. They were here when I got home last night. Took them and the bike upstairs to our bonus room and set them up next to the pool table. I figured it would be a big flat surface to fall over on. My first problem was how do I get on the bike, as its now about 3" taller. I got on the bike and could not get going. Talk about a slick surface. I realized in about 2 minutes that I was probably a trainer candidate.I was wearing regular shorts and dock shoes with speedplay pedals. One of my last thoughts before I went to sleep was, glad I kept the box so I can send these crazy things back. This morning I figured I would give it another try before I put them back in the box. I actually did get my 15 minutes in. These things are a real trip.I even got to the point where I put one bike shoe on(the side by the pool table). The information that was posted the other day on rollers was a great help. Since I don't think I will be doing the bunny hop on and off these things I was wondering what is the best way to get started and get off them?

|I have found the best way is to actually stand on the frame of the rollers and straddle the bike. It takes balance and flexibility since you have to really throw your leg over the top tube and stand on a one inch wide piece of tubing to do it, but that's how I make it on and off. Be careful not to stand on the cable between the front and rear rollers, though. I can imagine that they are susceptible to snapping if you place your weight on them and move your foot around. |
As for getting off, just stop pedalling and lean over once the wheels reach the point where inertia stops holding you upright. Its fun!

|When new to rollers, I think the best way to get started is to set them up right next to a doorway or wall, and lean with your shoulder on the wall, with both hands on the handlebars.
I also suggest using bike shoes and clip in. It gives you more control. Just set the release tension all the way loose and lubricate the pedals and cleats.

|Stick with the rollers. You'll have significantly more control of your bike when you're out on the road. The advice above for getting on and off the bike is absolutely correct. |

|I just got out of the hospital. I had been trying to get the hang of my rollers for the past couple of weeks. With the tips given here, I was well on my way to getting the hang of it by the time the weather turned bad (too soon). In fact, I maybe progressed too quickly and was actually doing pretty well. I too had them next to a pool table, with a chair on the other side, at least in the beginning. A few nights back, the first without the chair, I had a mishap. Came off the rollers and crashed through (yes, through) our french doors, and into the bbq on the back deck. Had the music cranked way up, and it took about 10 minutes for the wife to find me despite alot of yelling. Result- lots of cuts and bruises. One particularly bad gash on my head that needed stitches (who knew you needed a helmet to ride rollers?) and another on right shoulder. Man, am I sore! Not only that, but I've got a nice burned spot on our hardwood floors (about as wide as a 700x23 tire) and a french door that needs repair and another that will need the glass replaced. So I leave you with another tip: place your rollers where getting "launched" won't have any serious consequences.|

|results, including a long cleat scratch on a wood floor as I frantically tried to stay erect but instead executed an awkward split and crumpled to the floor, and I have left several nice burn marks on a rug as my wheels ground to an abrupt halt (Resolve does wonders), I never have gone an inch forward. Am I to understand that your speed propelled you forward through the french doors or did you pitch yourself sideways?|

|expensive for support. You probably won't go over that way; you'll go over the other way, but then your wheels and stuff will hit the pool table as you go down and who needs that.
What I do is set up next to a banister at the foot of the stairs in my basement. With the banister to my right, I clip in with my left foot, grab the banister, and sling my right leg over. I've tried to skip that part and just sort of stand on the frame of the rollers, but that doesn't work. To get off, I just reverse the process. After one season with the rollers, I rarely feel the need to grab on in mid-session, but it's there if I need it. Cheesy, maybe, for those who are bunnyhopping, but it works for me.
Some other tips. Push a big gear. Spinning your wheels faster increases the gyro effect. Because you will sweat buckets, get a fan; it really helps. You also may want to put something underneath you, unless you want your pool room to smell like a gym, assuming it doesn't already.
I too thought rollers were a joke (on me). After awhile though, they weren't only doable, they became fun, and they improved stroke and balance immeasureably. If I can do it, you can do it. You won't regret it, I promise.

|I never actually tried hopping off the rollers, but I would imagine its fairly easy. The question is, do you hop off sideways or some other way (which i can't imagine). Do you stop for a brief second before you hop off?
When you stop pedaling and click out with one foot, what sometimes happens is that you loose your balance and fall on the wrong side while still clipped in. Moral of the story, keep wheels spinning, unclick, put the foot out and stop the bike with your foot.

|Bunny hop off at slow speeds on the side away from the belt. If you get used to coming off the rollers deliberately Burbank Get Offs (AKA Gravity Assisted Dismounts) are less likely.|

|I new to road riding this summer, and recently new to rollers. Im **really** hoping that they help my riding out. I keep my remote handy while im "rolling" and flip through the channels.|
