Presta Valve question(4 posts)

I broke off the threaded stem on my tube pumping up my tire. Am I right to understand that the purpose of the stem is just to make a positive valve seal and that the tube should still be functional? When pumping is it air pressure alone that opens the seal, not by pushing on the stem? Would you recommend scrapping the tube asap? Can the valve be replaced?

Don't waste your time trying to fix a broken stem. Just pop for a couple of bucks and buy a new tube. Same could be said for fixing flats with a patch kit, unless you are out on the road and need to patch to get home.

I patch flats on principle. I toss the tube when there's a problem with the valve.

Unless it is a high$$ tubular, or a lightweight tube with a removable core, toss it. You could probably go on with it, if it broke on the road, but why risk it when tubes cost $4??
