|I've got around 3300 miles on the chain that came with my bike. I'm wondering if it's time to replace it? It still works fine, but on longer rides it gets a little noisy toward the end. Any suggestions?|

|Dont worry about the chain until it starts to skip or it breaks.
Remember that you will have to change the cassette as well.

|If you wait until the chain skips, you've waited too long and you probably will have to replace other parts. Keep it clean, replace it when it shows signs of wear (stretch). And you'll keep the rest of the parts much longer.|

|The noise is probably coming from your chain lube being incorrectly applied or otherwise not being up to the task. I've been using Boeshield and fairly recently switched to Prolink. Both will last weeks on one application. I apply lube liberally to each bushing on the chain, spin the cranks, then wipe the chain down with a rag. No problems.
In terms of chain wear, put some tension on the chain and measure out 12 link pairs. A new chain should measure 12", since derailleur chain has a half inch pitch. If the distance, pin to pin, is less than 12 1/16", then you're OK. If it's between 12 1/16 and 12 1/8, then replace the chain. If the distance is greater than 12 1/8th, then you may be in the market for some new drivetrain parts.

|Campy 10-speed chains are supposed to be changed at 3000, but 9 speed Shimano and others can last as long as 15000 miles. Riding in dusty, sandy, or rainy conditions wears a chain out quicker. The key for longevity is to keep it clean and lubed. Some people like White Lightening, but I have had better luck with Pedro's cleaners and lubes. I lube my chain once a week with their Ice Wax.
The 10 inch measure test shows if a chain is too old and stretched out.

|According to the Campy web site, the C10 chain is as strong or stronger mechanically than the C9 chain. It is to be checked for wear in the normal manner.|

|I've got around 15K on my Ultegra 9 speed. I've kept it clean and lubricated but I'm probably going to replace it along with the cog within the next month or so. I clean and lube my chain after every ride, I guess that's the secret for me...|

|Measuring is the true sign it is time to go, but I'd replace it. Chains, even good ones, are fairly cheap. Who ever wants a mid-ride broken link? Blech! So, people may consider it wasteful but I replace earlier than measuring may indicate; anytime I'm doing an annual tune/overhaul if not sooner.|

|With 5000 miles on a DuraAce chain, catastrophy struck me down one day as I was practicing my finishline power sprint up a moderate grade. In previous few minutes, chain had suddenly become confused at front derailleur - it started skipping and not staying put as if it had a mind of it's own. Powering up the hill, I shifted my rear end and suddenly the cranks froze, with the rear derailleur wrapping itself backwards and up into the spokes - total rearend trashout.
Derailleru had torn from the hanger, and I had even bent the hanger (frame is ti) with the force I put into the drivetrain. The shop had to bend the hanger back as best they could later on.
Anyway, the autopsy found the chain with some broken links as well. I think what happened is that the chain might have broke a link early on which caused the jumping around up front. When I powered up the hill, all hell broke loose as I said.
Moral is, penny saved, pound foolish, or whatever. Chains are cheaper than derailleurs and frame repairs, I found out.
