Another compatibility question this morning (cassettes)(2 posts)

Another compatibility question this morning (cassettes)PeterRider

Recently somebody told me it's possible to use Shimano XT 11-28 cassettes with Ultegra 8spd equipment, provided I get a 1.2 mm spacer.

Before getting a new cassette, I would like to try. But all I managed to borrow from a friend, is a 9spd XT cassette. So my question is : is it going to fit on the wheel ? I know it won't shift correctly, but it's just for a try.

Thanks !

Pierre

Mine's all 9 speed, but I regularly switch between Ultegra and XT cassettes. Shifts just fine on either cassette with no derailleur adjustments (I use a mountain bike derailleur). I don't use any spacers other than the ones which come with the cassettes.

I guess I don't understand your question. 8 and 9 speed cassettes will fit on the same freehub body. Obviously, you have to use the proper shifter and chain because the cog to cog spacing is different.
