|I was waiting at our local meeting spot this Sunday for a riding partner when the following happened. This spot is the beginning of a paved trail that wanders through the woods across LI and is shared by bikers, joggers and other outdoor enthusiasts. A guy just finished his jog and collapsed. There happened to be an off duty fireman and cop at the trail and they immediately began resuscitation efforts. An ambulance finally came and the jogger was taken away. I know the off duty fireman. I saw him today and learned that the jogger did not make it. I also learned he had no ID with him on his run.
I do not know how long it took to find out his identity but it must have been a long time for his family! It seems this guy was a triathlete and doctor, so if it can happen to him it can happen to any of us. We may not be able to prevent disaster but we can carry ID to assist people helping us or for others to contact our families. Be safe out there.

|...was also saddened by the death of a rider. He had a heart attack and died just a couple of miles from the finish.
I don't know all the details, but I could visualize him pedalling through the pouring rain, saying to himself "Just a little bit more...just a little further..."
You're right, Robert. Let's carry id, and listen to our bodies!
