What are those white bandages-looking things that the pros wear over their knees? They go from upper thigh to calf. Are they bandages to protect road rash? I've only noticed them in the Spring classics and thought they also might be heat packs to keep the knees warm.

You are right on both counts, in a way, as some of those bandages you see may be real bandages for boo-boos, but there are warming "plasters" that are self-adhesive to cover exposed joints.

I've only seen them in Chinese drugstores, and they come in different levels of heat, primarily designed for pain relief. The package that I have have the "3 Chili Pepper" icon (yow!), but curiously enough is marked "Product of Germany".

If you want self-adhesive bandages in a multitude of colors, check out the local farm supply house for "horse wrap" About a buck a roll, comes in 4" widths and I cut it down to 1" or so for busted fingers and such.
