|All this waving talk was big last year, and my buddies Jim and Steve Stafford decided to do an experiment. They're 24 year old identical twins. Jim rides a bright yellow Serotta and wears a yellow Louis Garneau helmet. Steve rides a polished titanium Airborne, and wears a black Bell helmet. They each rode a twenty mile circuit near their homes in central Florida over 70 times alone since December. They each encountered fifty other road riders (someone riding a bike with drop bars) heading the opposite direction during the test (they stopped counting when they hit fifty. They each waved first to 25 riders, and didn't wave at all to the other 25.
Jim, on his yellow Serotta with yellow helmet, received a return wave from 18 out of 25 riders, and an "introductory" wave from 12 out of 25. Steve, on his stealthier rig, got a return wave from 12 riders, and an introductory wave from only 7.
Feel free to make of it what you will...
