Got an easy question on bike technologies for ya;

- Around what time did companies drop the 6 speed rear cogset and start going to 7-8-9-10? On the same wavelength, what is the old and new rear wheel width of these two? Was the 6 speed rear end like 130mm and the new is 135mm? Just guessing at the measurements there for illustration.

Thanks

my rough estimates:

the move from 5 to 6 made spacing go from 120 to 126. That was early 80s. 6 to 7 happened some time around 1985 if I remember right but there was no change in spacing. 7 to 8 made spacing go from 126 to 130 where it is currently. That was around 1990? Mtbs are currently 135.

My 74 fuji is a ten speed 126 rear. But I say check the Spec Geek. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/
