Do you ride in the greater metro "Chicagoland" area? Do you head out to the country (WI or IL) on the weekends? I'm just trying to get an idea of how to rack up good base training miles in a dense urban area when I'm traveling. I've found that the traffic lights in the Windy City get in the way, and the Lakefront path is just too congested on weekends. Any suggestions?

Do you visit Chicago regularly or live here? In what area of the city do you reside? I live in Arlington Heights and most people in the northwest ride through the Barrington Hills area and beyond. Unfortunately, if you live downtown, getting to Barrington is not convenient.

RolloT and AlexR both live in or near downtown and have the scoop on northside riding. I'm hoping they'll post too. If you're near the south side of Chicago, then checkout Chicagoland Bicycling (cbike.com) on Kedzie & 95th. Their team has to workout somewhere.

Once and a while, I do get in the car and drive up to the Baraboo, WI area. The hills are longer and the roads wide open. But that's 3 hours away.

I'm a regular visitor to the River North/Merchandise Mart area, but I live in DC. I'll be in Chicago this weekend, but I probably won't have a bike with me this time.

For me, riding downtown isn't as scary as driving downtown, but it just isn't a good way to get a solid workout because of the dense urban landscape. Is Barrington Hills accessible from Evanston? Do you know what the cycling scene is like in Evanston?

Barrington isn't really accessable from Evanston. They are far from each other. But Evanston is where Alex and Rollo ride, so they should be able to give you some good info.

As with anyone, the invitation is always open. You're welcome to take the Metra to Arlington Heights and I'll introduce you to some Barrington routes. But that's out of the way, and I have a feeling you might find the pace a bit lathargic.

Hey Nova,

Just email me and let me know when you'll be in town. It should be no problem organizing a small group ride. We may even be able to get you down to Barrington. Anyone else in the area (i.e. Chicago, Western Suburbs, Northside) interested in a RBR ride email me and let me know.

most rides in chicago involve getting to Evanston which is just north of chicago. most rides travel up sheridan road to highland park and beyond. very good road riding. best to go early in the day. see teamjudson site for ride pics.

Found this under "non-cycling" pics on your site. It made me laugh since I was expecting to see pics of a downtown ride. Also, when I click on "cycling pics" I see a pic of a guy in tourest garb posing in front of a Coca-Cola bus. I had one of those rides once! :-)
