Cyclist struck in Tennesseebuck

I heard that a cyclist was struck by a car during a century I was riding this past weekend. The ride was the HOT 100 in Murfreesboro, TN. I was told he was airlifted from the scene and is not expected to live. Any info on the accident or his condition would be appreciated.

The cyclist fell on a fast descent with gravel at the bottom. The ride organizers did mark warnings of the gravel on the road. There was NO automobile involved in the incident.

Thanks for the info. I remember a sketchy hill bottom somewhere around mile 20-30. I believe it crossed a bridge or a drainage and was very shady. Some locals at the front shouted out warnings to the main group but people were stll flying through it.
That was the place....nmrickmichaelson

I belong to the CCC (Cyclists Combating Cancer) and several members said that it was a doctor that crashed - about 60 years old - on a descent reaching speeds of 40 MPH. Apparently it was pretty ugly and he had to be air flighted out, but nobody knew more than what they saw as they rode by.

Unfortunately there was the worst news on the rider:

Our group received a letter on 8/29 from W. Ann Reynolds, President of UAB:

It is with great sadness that I announce that Dr. John Whitaker, Distinguished Professor and Chairman of UAB's Department of Neurology, passed away today from the injuries he sustained last weekend in a bicycling accident.

The attached forward email was from webmaster at www.mborobike.com about an acticle in the paper in Alabama yesterday.
