Car ad says "Let's be considerate of cyclists."Luis

The August 20 issue of Autoweek on page 7--an ad for the new Mini:

"Let's put away the middle finger. Let's lay off the horn. Let's volunteer jumper cables. Let's pay a stranger's toll. ___Let's be considerate of cyclists.___ Let's keep in mind automobiles were created to advance civilization. And for crying out loud, let's remember to turn off those blinkers. Let's motor." [emphasis added]

It's a fine sentiment, and the first time I've seen anything like it in a car magazine. (Boy, I'd like to see one of those with a pretty road bike on a roof rack.)

Now that's one ad I'll watch for. Actually, it will probably have a greater impact on the non-cycling community, without a pretty road bike on top. It may only fuel more negative remarks if there were a bike on top. "Those eletist yuppie bike blah, blah, blah, demanding we be more considerate." Might have a greater impact on non cyclists if there were a NASCAR sticker on it, a "Baby On Board" sticker, etc.
don't know about that,Made in Taiwan

Judging from the people that i have spoken with, they don't think people with a "road bike" is an elitist. Matter of fact, they don't even care if it is a road bike or a 35lb BMX. a bike is a bike. I don't know where this elitism deal get started, but 2 years ago, before i began cycling again and at that time, cycling wasn't important to me, when i see a bike (road, mtb, bmx, cruiser) it's just a bike.
I don't think the "general public" cares about your road bike, it's just a bike to them. so i don't think the non-cycling community is gonna think you're an elitist. they just think you have to get around and want to get around cheaply.
I'm sure you have this happened to you: you're trying to tell a non cyclist about the newest 5000 dollar frameset that just came out, and they just have a glaze in their eye and think you're dumb for paying more than 300 bucks for a bicycle. so, they don't think we're elitists, they think we're overpaying.

It's nice to see, but it's probably because the new mini is SO small that they figure mini-drivers (no, not the actress) will be treated about the same way as cyclists?

Nice to see car companies pay lip service to bike safety.

As a San Franciscan who lives in an apartment with no garage (street parking), I'm looking long and hard at replacing my '95 Neon with a Mini.

Tres cool...

the new mini isn't going to be as small as the original -- should be a bit shorter than the Neon, though. Looks like it's gonna be a great car. I used to park my Fury on the streets of SF. Parking got pretty bad in the last few years. And my old Volvo kept getting dents above the bumper from taller SUV idiots who didn't know how to park -- their bumpers or spare tire racks would smack the grill or hood. And if I'd had a car with these new painted bumpers, I woud have been bummed. Best car for parking on city streets is one you don't care about.
My problem was always bumper cornerskenyee

They seem to think they can make it, then they scrape the corner of your bumper and leave big gashes. I've seen cars do this, so it's not an SUV thing. Just an annoying "people in the city only know how to touch park" thing :-P
