New purchase opinions neededdmoller

I'm getting ready to take the plunge and move up from my 1985 vintage Schwinn World Sport and need some first hand opinions on choosing from the following options. Not planning on doing any racing, mostly longer weekend rides and an occasional century or charity ride. Original budget was about $1,000, but am willing to go to about $1,300 for the right bike if it'll be the one for the next 10 yrs. Looking at/considering:
Aluminum: Giant OCR 1, Cannondale 600, Specialized Allez Sport
Steel: Lemond BA (or Zurich for the right price - hearing lots of good things about this one), Bianchi Giro and Univega Modo Volare

Thanks

i just replaced my 1984 schwinn sprint as my main ride after several years dealing with the heavy frame, unresponsive brakes, and the wonders of suntour allegro friction shifting.

i test rode the lemond BA, cannondale r800, and a trek 2300, but ending up purchasing a klein quantum for $1375. the craftsmanship is impeccible, and the ride (especially acceleration and climbing) is rocket fast. my local dealer upgraded the group to ultegra with the exception of the brakes and levers (105), and it comes with the rolf vector comps. this weekend i took it on an 80 mile ride, and it performed beyond my greatest expectations, sad to say uncomparably better than my beloved schwinn sprint. if you can get a good closeout deal, i would consider testing the quantum.

go to chucksbikes.com and look at the GT ZR 2.0. For just over $1100 you get full ultegra, 1 1/8" steerer, and a very respected frameset. Worth a look because they wont last.

If you know your frame size and dont mind buying mail order I would look at GVH bikes.com. He has some great steel frames you can get built with Ultegra or daytona for around $1300. For your price point and riding needs I would stick to steel IMHO.
