Maybe I'm just real lucky or I have a guardian angel.look271

I read (sometimes with near horror) stories of riders getting clipped with mirrors, getting run off the road, etc. While I admit to having had several "close calls" none have really been that antagonistic on the part of the motorist (mostly stupid mistakes by drivers). Does anyone else feel this way? I live in south central PA, just outside of Harrisburg. We have our share of rednecks, but, for the MOST part, motorists don't intimidate me. I ride mostly solo. I guess I'll just thank my lucky stars and keep riding.

...it's like announcing that you haven't flatted all year...better to keep that one quiet.

Don't get me wrong. I was hit 2 years ago, but, like I said, it was more stupidity/lack of driving experience on the driver's part (18-19 y/o college girl-turned left in front of me while I was coming the other way-she didn't see me...). I know, I'd better watch out!

I was hit by cars a couple of times as a teenager. I resumed riding in my mid 40's and I haven't had any problems with cars. Drivers have definitely not gotten any better over the years, so the improvement is probably attributable to my being a safer rider than I used to be.

I agree with the above, don't tempt fate. Especially as a fellow PA rider. I've been lucky too and ride mostly solo, but I've found most drivers have been pretty good around me. I'm waiting for the start of school though when the bus drivers are back on the road. Then I worry, because they fly down the roads.

Happy riding.

I also live in PA and we have our share of bad motorists where I live. (Which is in south central pa as well, i'm about an hour away from the Maryland State line in Bedford county.) Our town lacking of cyclist very badly and I am only one of about 5 or 6 roadies. So the sport is definatley lacking in my area and it seems like all the motorists don't know the laws about cyclists. And they seem to always think I should be the one to move out of the way and get off the road all together. Believe me i've had my share of redneck experiences out on the back country roads that i ride on. But i make the best of it.

I think that that's a large part of my good fortune; there are alot of roadies here and alot of group rides; there's a ride almost every day of the week, sometimes more than 1 plus the various riders like me who go it alone. Drivers are just accostumed to seeing bikes on the road and behave in a (mostly) civilized matter.
