Rim Tape Alternative / Help!!!!!!Les3333

I was checking over my bike for a bike race tomorrow and filled my tires. All of a sudden my tube popped. It turns out that my rim tape tore around one of the spoke holes and puctured my tire. I dont have any rim tape to repair and all of the local bike shops are closed, what else can I use?

Strapping tape wrapped around the rim twice works as well as rim tape. I've use it several times in an emergency and left it on for months without troubles.

Taking a chance that this pic doesn't turn foul, it's tape you can buy at most stores with filament/thread imbedded and running the length of the tape.

You know, the smooth black stuff. Trick is to pull it tight and it'll go one real nice. You may want to go over it 2x, but it will work untill you get some real rim tape. I'd stay away from strapping tape. It's a PITA to get off.

Your right the packing tape is a pain to remove, but it never failed on me like electrical tape. Mtb wheels w/ slicks at 85psi, tape sliced nice neat and round along the edge of nipple hole.

Now, I keep a roll of Velox rim tape in the toolbox.

velox is the only stuff i'll ever use. all my wheels have it, and in 30 years of riding it's never let me down, not even once.

by far the best stuff out there.

Ditto on the velox, it's the only stuff that works for me. What I started doing is buying rolls in bulk of six and I always have rim tape laying around, same on tubes and tires, stock up on them as you always end up using them sooner or later, preferably later....
The electric tape will not support the high psi if your have modern zoot rims with recessed nipple chambers. I blew a tube in my garage before I even hit the road.
I found it's the little things that give your trouble...
