1st of all...where are you headed? Rt 156 (Rope Ferry Rd.) Waterford thru Niantic heading west to Old Lyme which is a great ride with moderate traffic and easy hills.
I am heading to LarchmontThioderek

On Boston Post Road, which runs right through Larchmont.

Once you get to E Haven it'll be 4 lanes and or inner city riding - choke 'n' puke we used to call it - most all of the way. Hills won't be much trouble though. Any useful alternatives make the ride quite a bit longer and quite a bit hillier. I'd ride for fun in eastern CT and take the car to Larchmont.

I kind of figured I would be in for a bit of hell.

I am riding out to Orient Point from Brooklyn in the morning, and taking the ferry across to New London. It is going to be about 220-230 miles all told. I just want to finish before 7:30. I have to be at a party by then in Larchmont.

Thanks for the help though.

Is the post road also known as route 1? If so I may be able to help you out a little. I rode along there last summer on my way down to philly. You mentioned that you were riding there soon. I won't have time until at least sunday, but if you like you can email me and I will try to dig out my papers to find the specific detour routes that I laid out ahead of time when researching the ride.

It definitely had it's moments, but hey, when you're being chased by dogs and there are hollowpoint rounds whizzing by your head, you definitely increase your average speed! If you need directions sooner than sunday try looking at rt. 146. Also, CTDOT had a good bike suitability map that they mailed me last year.
