|A while back I blew off some steam when a posted(by another) question got several dumb ass answers. I want to thank those who sent in answers to my "blow up". Now can anyone answer my question. I am looking for a Ti bike (aren't we all) that must stay under $3,500. Need it built up in a shop as I cannot do. I am 5'7'' and currently ride a Specialized. Does anyone have any ideas? Shops in my area are very few and far in between. trying to get one place to get a Merlin in my size(50CM)to try and its almost impossible. Tried a Lemond but want to get another feel before I lay down my CHUMP change. The tricycle I referred too is a 1 speed UNultegra with NON brakes but the damn tires are unbeatable..no flats in 35 years.|

|about Macalu Ti frames. People on this site who have them seem to really like them, and Excel is great to deal with. You can get one built up with Chorus or Ultegra for less than your budgeted allowance. |

|I'm in the same boat on buying a Ti bike. Take a look at Serotta's Ti line. The Classique Ti is a good price for an incredible ride. http://serotta.com/models/classique.htm
The only problem might be finding a LBS that deals them. If you don't see one listed on their dealer locator page, contact them by email or call. They found one close to me that wasn't listed.
The Concours model is the next one up and can be custom fitted and built. Why do I pust Serotta so much? The best quality frames, no exception. My MTB from them (lost in a fire) was absolutely perfect in every way. They are heavy into proper sizing and professional service. They design the tubes and frame for the most comfortable ride, but without losing stiffness in the right places. They also have test rides at bigger bike events.
A Ti bike is good, but a Ti built by a great builder that fits perfectly is incredible.

|You should be able to get a Litespeed Tuscany for 3500 or less you might even be able to get Chorus or if you insist on ShimaNO D/A would be similarly priced... Also check out Colorado Cyclist if I remember right they had some killer deals on the 2001 Ultimate. I recently spoke to the guys at Gitabike and they have a few Merckx ti (made by LS)frames left over from the past couple of years and are offering some pretty substantial discounts on them. If you can find an LBS that deals with Merckx they should be able to pass the savings on to you...
P.S. No matter what you hear about welds, you cannont tell the integrity of a weld by its looks...

You know, Ti is so durable, that buying a used Ti frame is a pretty safe bet, and you could stay in your budget and get a high end frame at the same time.
There are a lot of good deals out there on 1-2 year old Merlins, Moots, etc.
Have a look around.

|Serotta makes a Concours and a Classic which are significantly cheaper than the Legend or Hors, but custom sizing isn't "free", but still avail. Still damn good rides in many people's minds. In my mind there's no reason why should compromise fit due to a budget constraint. You can also keep the cost down if you transfer parts over from your old ride - I do this all the time for buds when they upgrade their frames. A shop shouldn't really charge more than $200 even if your project is a bit of a nightmare and these are Silicon Valley prices. Who knows you may get lucky and find some buddy who is a good wrench and will do it for next to zilch. You may alos get lucky if you post a "wanted to buy" add on the www.serotta.com users board. You'd probably die if you knew what I picked my used Legend up for. I've got well less thatn $3,500 in it but the replacement cost would kill me.|

|Colorado cyclist has the Douglas precision Ti for $1959 with Ultegra, $2349 with DA, Airborne's can be had for way under $3500, as can Habanero frames.|

|I recommend looking into titanium bikes from Airborne at www.airborne.net. I bought an Airborne Zepplin 58cm with Chorus 10 speed, Record hubs & BB, King headset, Reynolds Ozo Pro carbon fork & steerer, Mavic wheels, etc for $2500. The ride is absolutely fantastic, smooth and solid, and it weighs less than 18 pounds. I selected my parts on the website, called toll free concerning some questions, and they build it up for me. When it arrived, all I had to do was put the seat in, clamp the handlebars into the stem, and put on the front wheel (and fill the water bottle). I have never had to adjust anything (1700 miles).|

|Why get cheap TI when you can build it up to your spec, your color, right fit. You could build a Eddy Merckx Millinium with Record 10spd for under $3500 @wrenchscience.com or a Dean, or a moots. If your going to by TI, don't buy budget TI. ITs like buying a Miata car when you could buy a BMW. I wouldn't substitute a good deal with out checking out what it would take to get good craftsmanship.|

|you're gonna have to decide how important it is to you to be able to try before you buy. Any of the bikes suggested above could work great if they fit. I'd take a real close look at how you fit on the Specialized. Measure the hell out of yourself and become an expert on geometry. Then take the plunge and place your order--mail order if you have to.

If you want a Litespeed everyone's gonna start blowing out the 2001s at sick prices in another couple of months (I pity anyone who pays full retail for a Litespeed). As others have mentioned, I think Serotta would be a nice option, too--the Classique seems like a hell of a nice bike for the money. And then there's Dean, which is $1200, really. Don't make any compromises -- $3500 should buy one hell of a bike.
