wheel replacement question(3 posts)

wheel replacement questionStan_B

A friend is giving me his used FIR rim to replace my rear rim which keeps breaking spokes. My question: His rim has an 8 gear shimano gear cluster while my current one has a 9. Can I just put his wheel on and use my existing derailler set up? Or do I have to get his 8 gear off and install my 9 gear cluster onto his rim? Is that even possible?

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
use the 9 speed cassette...C-40

The 8 speed cog spacing is wider. It won't shift properly on a 9 speed drivetrain. Take the cassette off your old wheel and put it on the new one. Shimano 8 and 9 speed cassettes can be interchanged.

Also your 9 speed chain won't run on an 8 speed cassette.
