Greg LeMond Clarifies Statement on Lance Armstrong
WAYZATA, Minn., Aug. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by Greg LeMond:

``I would like to set the record straight regarding my recent comments about Lance Armstrong. I sincerely regret that some of my remarks were taken out of context and seemed to question the veracity of Lance's performances.

``For the record, I want to be clear that I believe Lance to be a great champion and I do not believe, in any way, that he has ever used any performance enhancing substances. I believe his performances are the result of the same hard work, dedication and focus that were mine ten years ago.''

He probably should have apologized to Lance too when they spoke after Greg made those comments. I don't see how his comments could be taken the wrong way, they were pretty forward. It sounds like the PR machine is turning here, trying to save face.

No matter what you might THINK someone is doing, you should keep it to yourself until you have PROOF. It's too bad Greg isn't using his high profile to speak out against confirmed dopers like Bo Hamburger who are getting away with it, instead of casting suspicion and innuendo.

The Trek PR machine told Lemond to cool it I bet. Trek and Lemond are basically built by the same company I believe, and with Treks investment in Postal and Armstrong they dont want any problems. I see the money men in the company telling Lemond to back off. Im sure Lemond still gets money as a spoksman for the lemond bike company. You pull at someones purse strings and they will follow.
I wish someone would pull at my purse strings.. (nm)UncleMoe

Do you really know the full context of Lemond's original statement, or are you simply going on what was in the press? I don't know and have never seen the full paragraph or full intereview in which Lemond was alleged to have made his statement about Armstrong. But until that becomes public (I don't think it has been published anywhere), I'm more than willing to withhold judgement on Lemond. The press will do just about anything to make a story - quoting out of context for "a better read" is very common practice. To quote the English tabloid, The Mirror: "We don't make it up, we just make it interesting." Remember: everything you read in the paper is absolutely true, except for those things about which you have personal knowledge.
I see GL is a great cyclist when backpedaling, too...(nm)curtis

Clarify? Is that what this is? Looks like an about face to me. I'm glad Greg finally decided to apologize. Unfortunately, I think he waited too long and much damage was done.

Geeze. Lemond NEVER accused LA of doping. He used strong language voice his disapproval over Lance's working with Ferrari. (Oh my, an athlete going over the top with criticism, that's new!!) Lemond is entitled to his well informed opinion, even if you don't happen to like it. Lemond has no need to apologize or clarify. Some people will read any criticism as an attack or even slander.

Personally, I am devastated by Lance's decision not to ride the Vuelta in support of Heras. I just don't want to comment on this year's Vuelta. This is not sour grapes. I'm just disappointed in Lance.

Oh, that was harsh. Perhaps I will have to clarify that statement in a few weeks.

I too am disappointed in Armstrong not riding in the Vuelta, after what appeared to be a committment to assist Heras if he helped him win a 3rd TDF. Alot of LA supporters have been interpreting this quote found in cyclingnews.com april 2001, as just a distant maybe.
And yet, as you've stated, they are all over GL for pretty much accusing LA of doping, when all he alluded to was his involvment with the good Dr.
The conclusion is that LA is the Golden Haired boy that can do no wrong.

Lemond has experience backpedaling. In the mid 80's he accused Moreno Argentin of demanding a bribe of several thousand dollars to aid in a chase. He blabbed this to the press and later recanted saying he "misunderstood" Argentin but that's his right afterall, to misunderstand and shoot his mouth off, afterall he's a great champion and an American and all. He won the Tour De France 3 times and would have won more except he got shot on April 20th turkey hun... er preparing for the 1987 season that was already several months underway.
