is there any real difference, handling, or comfort, with curved forks vs straight or is this mainly a marketing gimmick?

At least none that can be attritbuted specifically to the straight or curved design. Either style can be obtained in the same range of 40 to 45mm rake. Either design could ride stiff, depending on how stiffly the crown area is constructed, the amount and orientation of the carbon fibers, and other factors.
