I would like to know if this tubing was any good. I am contemplating buying a 47 cm. Eddy Merckx Century frame. Any input will be appreciated.
I'll take a stab at it.CSIguy

This was the top of the line Columbus tubing in the early 90's. I believe it was rifled on the inside to shave weight. I'm no authority on this stuff though so someone else may know more. I had a TSX frame in '92. It was fairly heavy by todays standards, but had a very good ride quality.

TSX was an upgrade by Columbus in the late '80's for the SLX/SPX tubeset. The main improvement on TSX was that is was internally rifled from end to end on the down tube. This differed from SLX in that SLX was rifled only on the ends of the tube, where the butted sections existed. TSX was heavier than SLX, but much more rigid. A 56cm TSX frame weighed in near 6 pounds. On a 47cm, the weight will be significantly less, and the Merckx frames are excellent. Newer steel tubesets use differencial shapes for rigidity, so frames can be made with lighter tubesets, but still maintain their stiffness.

If the price is right, go for it. The frame (well taken care of) will last for decades!! My SLX Merckx is 14 years old, and rides almost as good as the day I bought it.

I had a Merckx 10th anniversary edition with the TSX tubing. The frame was a little on the heavy side (by today's standards) but rode absolutely great. The handling was superb; After running out the road twice, one resulting in a spill, I'm beginning to wonder if my new bike handles as well. I've also noticed it seems to flex a little more at high speed (above 40 mph) than my old trusty Merckx. I'd say go for it if it's a good deal.
