Merlin vs. LS UltimateMonte2

I am interested in a Merlin XL. Currently have a 99 LS Ultimate and would love to hear thoughts from owners of one or both. Thanks.
Ultimate rides very harsh...C-40

For lighter riders, the Ultimate is as harsh as you can get. The XL couldn't help but be better riding. I had a 55cm '98 model Ultimate and sold after one season for something a lot more comfortable (C-40).

I've had a LS Ultimate for a year and don't find it harsh. Quite the contrary. I am 200lbs and bought a Ti frame to get a smooth compliant ride. The LS did not disappoint. There have been a lot of negative posts concerning LS quality lately. If LS is having quality problems, you would never guess it from my ride. The welds are works of art. I have not experienced any problems. Well worth the money IMHO.

I've got a 1999 Ultimate and I think it rides very well. It is a stiff bike -- maybe too stiff for a smaller rider. I weigh 190 and think it rides fine. I also have a C-40 which is a different riding bike. I find neither one too stiff, or too complaint. They're different riding and I like them both. Colorado Cyclist has a killer deal on an Ultimate with DA/Ultegra for $3000/$2500 complete. Its a good bike, espacially if you're big.

I suspect this means that the Ultimate will go through another drastic change for 2002. Hmmm, carbon stays? Litespeed makes good bikes. They also play the marketing game pretty effectively. Personally, I don't care if people put them down as too common place. They're good bikes. If you're sensitive about that, or want something unique, get the Merlin. Be careful though, I hear the Merlin XL is much stiffer than the Road. Personally, I think Merlin and Seven are way over-priced for what they are. A LS Ultimate with DA for $3000 is a steal.
