could anyone tell me the difference between the performance on a trek 5200 carbon fiber and the trek 2300 aluminum...is the difference worth $600...

I rode both of these bikes when I was shopping. Although there may be a couple smaller differences, the the only real difference is the frame and fork. The comp group on both is Ultegra, the wheels are Rolf Comps and they both have a lot of Icon parts. For me, after riding both bikes the $600 difference seems like a bargain, but it your cash !

You hit the nail on the head... aluminum versus carbon. I test rode both and like the feel of carbon. The geometry of the frames are identical, so I would just do a lot of test riding and see what feels right to you.
