HELP: Which 90's Road Bike?(6 posts)

HELP: Which 90's Road Bike?Jorge
Aug 3, 2001 1:22 PM
I need help in deciding which of the following used bikes to get. I am in my mid 30's trying to get back in the sport, I used to race 15 years ago. The bikes are: 1994 ZUNOW DiPicce(Dura-Ace non STI, custom built wheels, $550), 199), Early-90's Klein Quantum Race (Shimano 105 STI Triple, Icon Carbon Fork, Campy Moskva Rims, $900), 1994 Battaglin Champion of the World (Columbus Max, Shimano 600 STI, Campy Ypsilon Rims, $800). All the bicycles are about 50 cm. and in very good condition. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I think the Quantum Race is overpriced if it is early 90s. I'd pick the Battaglin (I'm a comfort queen though, and among those three I'd guess that the Battaglin is the most compliant frame)
In that price range you can get new....Mike K

Search this board and you will find a number of posts covering sub $1000 bikes.
None of the bikes you mention are worth the money that is being asked.
You can buy a brand new bike with 105 on it for under a grand.
With sales season almost up on us, you should cruise your local bike shops for closeouts on 2001 models - you'll find some great deals.
Paying almost a grand for a 10 year old bike is just plain silly (unless you are a collector and the bike has collector value).

Are these NOS bikes or used? If used, I'd think twice about plopping out nearly 1k. You might want to sit tight, the 2002 models will be coming out soon and there will be some good deals on this years models. Techonology has changed a lot over the past few years and you would be a lot better off with a bike that carries some type of warrantee. IMHO you always take a change with a used bike...

I had the chance to test ride the Battaglin, and it is pretty smooth. It turned out to be a 1996 model and most components are NOS. Definetely a head turner. Browsing the local shops, the only way I could've got a bike this good looking was spending at least $1300. My only concern is the tubing, which is Columbus MAX and in other forums they've told me it is kind of heavy. Is this machine worth $800?

I can't help you on the price, I don't know what they went for new.
Hey, if it fits, and it's in good shape, go for it. Get out there and start riding while the weather is still good...
