I need some advice on the best route from St. Louis to Springfield. I'll be coming off the eastern terminal of the Katy Trail in Missouri and camping at Pere Marquette State Park and getting up and riding into Springfield the next day. I was thinking of taking Alton Rd. to Carlinville and then 4Hwy up to Springfield from there. Anyone log any miles in this area? Are these roads good? Safe?
I live in Kansas and have never riden in Ill so any advice is appriciated. Thanks.

Sorry, but if you come further north I can help you out. You can ride old 66 north out of Spfld, Every 15 miles or so there is a small town with convience stores. Check out League of Illinois Bikers at
www.LIB.org for info, might even be some maps there. When are you going to be doing this? Just curious.

I'm planning on backroading it over to the Katy Trail in Clinton, Mo, riding that across the state and then cruising up to Springfield. I'm basically just riding until I run out of vacation time and I figure Springfield will be about as far as I can get in a week. That would be around 600 miles.
