Lemond Nevada City vs. Trek 1000 vs. Specialized allez A1wwelker

I am considering purchasing either a Lemond Nevada City, Trek 1000, or a Specialized allez A1 from my LBS. I am kinda' leary of purchasing any of these since reading all the posts about the crappy shimano components that all these bikes come with. It seems like everyone changes their components for better equipment. So, which bike would be best to put the money towards? Is there much difference in frames of these bikes? I can always upgrade components later. I want to join the local bike club and start burning up some miles!

Faced with the same choice, I wound up getting the Nevada City. The Trek and Specialized bikes both felt too twitchy for my tastes when I took them for their test rides, whereas I was strongly tempted to ride the LeMond the forty miles home and phone in my credit card information. I don't know about the other two bikes (or bike lines), but the only difference between the Nevada City and the next two more expensive models (the Tourmalet and the Buenos Aires) is the component specs--the frames are identical.

Don't sweat the Sora--it's a vast improvement over the old bottom-rung Shimano lines.

Went back to the bike shop today and picked up the Lemond Nevada City. I tried the other ones and like you had commented they did fell "twitchy". I really liked how the sora gear felt on the Lemond. That was until the salesman said, "Take this bike out and try it." A Ti Lightspeed, WOW! Nice bike, but it will have to wait. Can't wait to start putting some miles on it now. :)

had to have my rear wheel rebuilt due to broken spokes. guy i ride with has a current year/01 model, he's had to have BOTH rebuilt. also, i think this year comes with a sora/105 mix or something, my '00 is 105/ritchey throughout. fyi.
