why do you bother to shave, i cant find a good reasonishmael

ive heard that its easier to deal with road rash if they are shaved but i dont get enough road rash to warrant shaving for that reason... and its said you can be massaged easier, but no one will massage me...so the only reason i can think of to shave is that i might go faster, but how much faster?....is it worth it?...it seems like more trouble than its worth since im not into the sexyness part of it..
Don't do it then (nm)mike mcmahon

It has been a tradition for a long time. Those three are good reasons to do it, but I think it shows a commitment to the sport, you a have a response to the "why" question, "i ride a bike", "oh" followed by a puzzled look is usually how the conversation goes. Although spending upwards of $1500 on a bike shows commitment also, if you don't want to don't, but if you do be proud...............

I think the guys with the real hairy legs should shave just out of courtesy. :-)

You won't gain any speed from it, realistically. And, since...boy nigel

...you're not into the sexiness of it all (That figures), then forget it altogether. If you wanted to shave by now, you would have.

The "feeling" IS worth it for many of us, but you likely wouldn't quantify it as such.

Happy hirsuteness,

the main advantage to shaving is not necessarily that it will be easier to deal with road rash, but that it will save your skin in a fall. when your skin meets the asphalt, the hairs on your legs get pulled up by the notches and bumps in the asphalt, pulling more skin up with it to be torn off by the asphalt as well. basically, grab the hair on your skin and pull up. now imagine that at 20-30mph. ouch! my boyfriend got in a bad crash before he started shaving his legs, and almost had to get skin grafts done. his doctor told him that he needed to start shaving his legs. other than that, with shaved legs, you can show off your muscles more, and i know that *i* love the feeling of smooth legs in bed!

...about sunscreen, various after-exercise lotions and creams (e.g. A535), generally anything that has to be applied to the skin.

Washing grease marks and chainring tatoos is also easier.

Also, there's the intimidation factor. It's worked for me a couple of times now. Grrr... nothing like a pair of really ripped, shaved legs to shake up the opposition.
What about arms?Jim Burton

In the case of a crash, my arms also hit the asphalt! If road rash is the only reason, seems to me that any exposed hair should be taken off. I don't shave my arms. Does anyone else on the board?

I have very fair skin and was tired of putting globs of sunscreen on my hairy legs. I trim my legs with an electric razor every week or so. The stubble doesn't bother me and since my hair is such a light color you can't really see it when it is short. Now it's my "summer" hair cut.

Part of my "going native" fling. Working on chainsaws, looking for a beater 4x4 truck for a gettin' firewood, and spending more time on the MTB.
hey ..youre not a real road bikerishmael

i still dont think the reasons for shaving are good enough...my old man neighbor already thinks i look like guatamalen native in my bike duds.. the whole road biker cult gets to be too much sometimes and i need to keep it in perspective...
