The old "where's everyone from" with a twist.mk_42

So I wanted to do the "where's everyone from" but I'm sure it's been here so I'm trying it with a twist (the twist is shamelessly borrowed from work). The image below plots where the owner of the IP you are using is: hence people on AOL in virginia, microsoft employees in washington, etc. regardless of where they really are. It's right on with small business, schools, and small ISPs. Overall it's about 50% on with 30% being wrong (like AOL) and 20% being not found. But if a few hundred people look we should have a good sample I think.

Judging by the red dot covering my state (Rhode Island), this is working. Very interesting!

looks to me like it shows the corporate home office and the location of the proxy server but, since that's the Bay Area, it could very well be just about anybody. no dot in New Mexico, so I remain undetected.

To clarify how it works (and explain why you're not there)mk_42

Since so many people have been disapointed to find themselves not there I think I'll explain a little about how it works.
First of all you don't have to do anything, the act of seeing the image should put you on it (the image is updated with your location before it's sent to you). But that leaves a lot of people out and here's why:
I'm not on it. I use earthlink. I'm in LA.
The way it works is that the program runs around looking for the owner of the IP (in my case it ultimately finds earthlink). It searches the owner's information for something that could be an address and then tries to plot it.
So it actually DID find me but it thought I was in Atlanta, Georgia which is the headquarters of all things earthlink. If your IP at work comes from a large national company (eg ibm.com) or your IP is from a large nationwide provider (eg aol.com) your IP will resolve to their corporate address.

Other reasons you aren't plotted include: your IP was not resolvable to a name, it was resolved but no address info could be found, address info was found but didn't match up with our database for plotting, the network timed out so your IP won't be looked up till later or someone has already been resolved to your dot.

Most people have been checking it more then once so it looks underrepresented but if you go to the site and track message 2689 you can see it color coded for multiple hits.

The project is actually meant for "enhancing" emails. You can read about it at the site. Unfortunately this one is less successful then some because there is a large number of duds. If you want you can try sending your own and see if you get better results.
