LA interview with Paul Sherwin .....(7 posts)

LA interview with Paul Sherwin .....Live Steam
Jul 30, 2001 6:13 PM
During tonights review of the TDF, OLN replayed an interview by Paul Sherwin of Lance Armstrong. He asked him if he thought it was possible for him to win 5, 6, maybe even 7 Tours as his friend (LA's friend) had said. Armstrond replied "Eddy,Eddy,Eddy - well I only hope that ......". Is this Eddy, Eddy Merckx? Does Merckx think LA is that dominant that he can go on to win that many Tours? I know Merkyx is a commentator on a Euro sports channel. Has anyone heared him and has he commented on LA's ability?

TdF suits Lance's riding style these days. Who is challenging in the TdF? Ullrich, Pantani? Lance has been very fortunate and smart. No crashes in the race (3years), no illnesses that can creep up on you, uncanny. He believes LA is that dominant in the TdF, WHOGAS on the other classics in Europe. Outside of an Olympic Gold, I would bet that that is all LA wants. He has a winning formula and dominates 2 of 3 disciplines in the TdF.
Yes, he was referring to THE Eddy. (nm)MikeC

Merckx was quoted as saying: "He can rewrite the history books. Nobody can beat him. He can win six, seven Tours de France. He can win as many Tours as he wants."

Eddy is like a father to Lance, and most fathers will gush over their kids! Still, Eddy has a point. The way Lance is riding right now, there is no one who can touch him. How long Lance can ride at this level is the unknown. But few can really refute Merckx.

One of my favorite Lance quotes came when someone mentioned that Eddy had said Lance should have never gifted Pantani the Mt. Ventoux stage in the 2000 Tour. Lance got a big grin, chuckled a little (much like he did in this Sherwen interview), paused, then said "Well, if Eddy says I shouldn't have done it, then he's probably right." It was the perfect thing to say, because it both gave respect to the opinion of a great rider (Merckx), and also allowed Lance to say what I'm sure he really felt, given the reaction of Pantani afterwards.

Lance answered this question. In so many words he said that he would keep on riding and racing as long has he had the passion, for he loved what he was doing. With this thought in mind the only thing stopping him now would be his mind and barring injury and illness. I think we could see a 5 times in a row TDF yellow jersey winner. As at this point he is unbeatable. And you think Greg LeMond helped cycling in the U.S. Even my non-cycling friends are aware of L.A.
