I haven't worked out mine yet, since Gu gels work pretty well. However, if I ever get around to making one, I know that major component will be either honey or sugar cane syrup. How about some dissolved caffeine tablets to incorporate into the formula. Maybe some salt/potassium? Oh, and we definitely lack some complex carbohydrates here!!! SO, I NEED SUGGESTIONS. KEEP THEM COMING!!!
This formula should be very potent (red bull comes to mind) and give you a punch to finish off competitors for that 1000 dolla prime of yours. Haha.

I hate giving up secrets, but since you probally don't race against me here you go: unlike Gu this actually tastes good

Real maple syrup, salted peanut butter, chocolate syrup, and ground up expresso beans

The reason is that coffee beans have to be slow roasted for them to be of any use. Otherwise they would have too much moisture to be ground up and would have a bitter flavor. The roasting gives them a toasted flavor. he darker the bean the more it was roasted. the roasting actually depleats the caffeine content. People assume that expresso has more caffeine because it taste stronger. So if you want your mix to have a potent kick, use the rugular beans that are found at the counter of your local supermarket.

I never thought I'd find out about coffee minutae from a cycling board... I guess that's the reason I'm here. Anyone more odd facts, are highly welcome.

Here is a secret- use honey. There is a proven reason why for this. I could tell you more, but then what fun would it be?

Thought I was the only one using honey. Looks like the secret is out.
My formula... In a Gu flask: 2 Gu packs, honey, and 4 ground up advil tablets. Caffeine just doesn't do it for me. Advil seems to keep the "hurt" down and also helps with post ride soreness. Could be a placebo effect but it seems to work for me. Don't forget to wash any Gu mix with plenty of water or it will just sit.

How do you get peanut butter to mix? Do you use a flask? I love PB, let me know..

but I've used corn syrup (light, of course), mixed with Cytomax powder and a touch of lite salt (half sodium, half potassium) and a bit of water. The Cytomax gives it some color and flavor, and their secret lactate-reducing stuff, and the lite salt is just more electrolytes.
Oddly enough, high-fructose corn syrup is the main ingredient of most gels (and no, I don't know if the "normal" syrup is high-fructose or not, but since it's fairly sweet, probably), but it's pretty high in maltodextrin already, so I don't think more complex carbs are really necessary.
Honey will also work, as others have suggested, but I'd bet you want to dilute it a bit, or else the sweetness might be too much after you've been working hard for hours. Plus, the complex carbs in honey break down into fructose and glucose, if I remember right. Glucose is the good stuff, as it's absorbed very easily by the body (that's why diabetics carry glucose pills in case of hypoglycemia), but too much fructose can upset some people's stomachs, so try it before the race.
Sugar cane syrup may need some maltodextrin supplementation, but you can buy tubs of powder (I got 2 lbs for $7 at the health food store).
Now for extra caffeine, I suppose you could grind up a Vivarin/No-Doz, and add some, but trust me, they taste nasty just swallowing the tablet whole. I can't imagine powder would be better, so you'd need to mask the flavor somehow.
So, experiment away, and post your results.

I use Hammergel and tablets of salt/potassium and No Doz. The gel does the energy part, and then I can independently supplement with the tablets and control doseage based upon need. I actually prefer a Mountain Dew late in the ride to the caffeine tablets, but it's not always there.
