Bike Commuters, how (specifically) do you do it?mk_42
Jul 25, 2001 2:20 PM
There have been a couple of posts about commuting and training by commuting but I wanted to ask some specific questions about what you guys do.

How far do you ride?
How long (time) do you ride?
How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?)
Do you have a shower at work?
There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others?
For those of you that shower before you go and claim not to smell all day...do you sweat/smell a lot normally?
What do you wear on the bike? If you wear your bike clothes where do you keep them at work? Do you wear fresh clothes everyday so they don't smell at work and keep them in your desk or something?
What do you wear at work? Do you guys have shirt and tie (or even suit) jobs? Do you bring it in a backpack or a courrier bag?
How important are you at work? Do you have your own office/cube? Are you important enough that you can do whatever you want?
Do you ride your baby or do you have a commuter bike? Where do you keep it? are there bike racks? in your office? cube? in a hall somewhere?

Thanks a lot for any info

How far do you ride? About 29 miles round trip.

How long (time) do you ride? It averages between 45-55 minutes each way.

How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?) I'm not a racer, but I'm serious about riding. I ride with a group on weekends, and we usually do between 50-60 miles on a Sunday morning. We're usually close to a 20 mph average, depending on weather, the route, and who shows up.

Do you have a shower at work? Yup.

There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others? A "micro-bath" in the bathroom sink.

For those of you that shower before you go and claim not to smell all day...do you sweat/smell a lot normally? Yup, like a pig.

What do you wear on the bike? Cheap Nashbar/Performance Jerseys and Pearl Izumi shorts. In the winter, I wear a windbreaker, poly underwear, gloves, shoe liners, and tights.

If you wear your bike clothes where do you keep them at work? I keep them in a file cabinet in my office.

Do you wear fresh clothes everyday so they don't smell at work and keep them in your desk or something? Yes -- I get my shirts boxed when I dryclean them, and they fit nicely in my courier bag. I carry in fresh undies and socks. I keep a variety of suits on the back of my office door.

What do you wear at work? Suit, or nice slacks and shirt and tie.

Do you bring it in a backpack or a courrier bag? A courier bag rules. Try Ortlieb...excellent construction and waterproof.

How important are you at work? Do you have your own office/cube? Are you important enough that you can do whatever you want? I'm an attorney and have my own office. I have to look "nice", and wear a suit in court.

Do you ride your baby or do you have a commuter bike? My "nice" bike stays home. I commute on either a fixie (built from a frame scavenged from the trash) or a Bianchi Volpe that I bought for very little money.

Where do you keep it? are there bike racks? in your office? cube? in the hall somewhere? We have Bike racks.

Geez-a-wheez mk_42, take up much bandwidth? :-)
I'll try to answer in the order asked.
Front door to office, 4.9 miles. Plenty of alternate routes home, anywhere from 4.9 to 15, depending on the mood.
In the am, about 20-25 minutes, depending on lights and traffic.
Every now and then I'll go push 20-25, probably 16-18 miles in an hour. (More leisurely these days)
No shower.
I shower and deodorize prior to riding to work, a buddy at the office commutes every now and then around 11+ each way, he uses rubbing alcohol on a towel.
Everything regulation except cotton t-shirt. Draped over my bike.
Backpack my clothes. Business casual, on occasion I have brought in dress slacks, shirt and tie.
Software drone, yes I share an office with interns. No.
Yes, Kestrel 200. In the office against the wall next to my desk.
Hope this helps.

I don't often post on this message board, but thinking about how I'd answer this question and realized--I love my job!

How far do you ride? 5 miles each way, but I often take LONG detours and lunch rides.

How long (time) do you ride? 15-25 minutes each way, depending on traffic, lights, and weather.

How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?) Weekends: 50 miles plus, about 19-21 mph plus on flats. Serious enough to bore my non-cyclist friends.

Do you have a shower at work? Yes, but I don't bother to use it.

There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others? Sitting outside until I cool down, but it never gets really hot in the Northwest.

For those of you that shower before you go and claim not to smell all day...do you sweat/smell a lot normally? I HOPE not! Maybe I should ask my coworkers....

What do you wear on the bike? Bike clothes, but often mountain bike shorts.

If you wear your bike clothes where do you keep them at work? Sometimes in a locker in the office, but sometimes I don't bother to change at all. Wearing mountain bike shorts lets me get away with that.

Do you wear fresh clothes everyday so they don't smell at work and keep them in your desk or something? I keep a change of clothes at work but bring fresh socks and underwear every day.

What do you wear at work? Do you guys have shirt and tie (or even suit) jobs? Do you bring it in a backpack or a courrier bag? I can wear pretty much anything I want, except when I meet with clients (which happens only rarely). I use a courier bag--backpacks are too sweaty.

How important are you at work? Probably more important than I like to think.

Do you have your own office/cube? No.

Are you important enough that you can do whatever you want? No, but it's a really flexible company as long as I get my work done.

Do you ride your baby or do you have a commuter bike? Depends on the weather.

Where do you keep it? In my office, just feet from my desk, where it keeps telling me to sneak out of work a few minutes early.

3.5 miles each way, I commute from St. Patty's day to Thanksgiving. Gives me about 30 minutes daily on the bike. Quicker than driving because of lights and parking. Ride recreationally about 3-4 times per week, mixing it up between the road bike, mtb, and tandem so distance varies. I can hold my own with a good portion of the club guys.

No locker room or showers at work, hence I ride in my work clothes which may include a tie and slacks. Keep a pair of shoes at my desk so I don't wear my Sidi's to the staff meeting. Ride with courrier bag. Stuck in a cube, guess that means I'm not important. Lock the bike up outside with a seat cover for weather protection. We've just been hit with a couple of bike thefts last week, so I'm eyeing a spot in the basement.

22 miles door-to-door. hour and a half. 30-50 miles. no shower at work, shower before riding in, sweat ALOT, don't smell. bike clothes (lycra shorts, coolmax jersey, cleated shoes), I wear a uniform at work(I'm a mailman), I bring a fresh one in daily, carried in a backpack. I ride my good bike, leave it locked to a bike rack indoors.

It's about 9 or so miles each way, depending on the route.

Takes about 20-25 minutes depending on trafiic.

I ride about 100 miles a weekend as long as it is warm. Since I work in a bike shop I can take off anytime during the day so getting in some riding on the weekends is not all that important during the summer.

No shower at work.

I sweat a lot and I reak, but so do most of the others that work around me so it doesn't really matter, or at least I just don't really care.

Ride to work wearing my biking clothes and carry fresh clothes with me in a courier bag.

I wear shorts and t-shirt.

Somewhat important, if I don't build, then the there is nothing to sell.

I ride my baby and store it in a rack out on the floor.

55 miles round trip, two or three times per week.
80 - 100 minutes each way, depending on legs and wind.
Way too serious a cyclist for my own good.
Shower at work.
Deodorant after shower cuts down smell.
Bring in clean clothes on the days I drive.
Backpack or seatpost rack on days I forgot to leave clothes at work.
Khakis, button down shirts, no earrings.
My own cubicle, not very important, but well paid.
Winter I ride the fixie beater, summer I ride the good ones.
Bike rack out front.
Very few co-workers understand why.

About 8.5 miles each way; sometimes I take a longer way home (more like 12 miles) and lately I've been taking a much longer way home once a week (about 35-40 miles).

If I take the shortest way about 25-30 minutes.

I try to do a ~50 mile ride over the weekend, plus a longish ride once a week, plus I go mtn biking for a couple of hours twice a week with co-workers before work.

Have a shower at work, but only use it the days we go mtn biking before work.

During the summer, bike shorts and jersey; spring/fall, bike shorts or light tights and a t-shirt with a windbreaker; winter, tights, booties, same t-shirt and windbreaker unless it's really cold. I keep my bike clothes under my desk, towel draped over my bike if I shower at work.

I wear jeans/shorts and a t-shirt most of the time at work, bring it everyday in a courier bag. Much less sweaty than a backpack! I leave shoes at work.

How important? It depends if we're trying to push a release out the door soon (I work for a software company). I have a cube, no window :)

I have one mtn bike and one road bike, both are decent but not super nice. I ride my road bike unless we're mtn biking before work, or there's snow on the ground. I keep it in my cube.

If you're thinking about commuting, I say go for it! I started only riding a couple of days a week and now I do it almost every day. I get grumpy and fidgety on the days when I don't ride now!

How far do you ride? 10k (6mi)

How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?) anywhere from 50-120km at an average of 30+ kph
Do you have a shower at work? yes

There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others?
(and other questions ...)

If it's a straight commute this is how I do it.

I don't require any special clothes so I wear comfortnable gear and when I get to work I simple put on a fresh shirt and some "shower-in-a-can" I ride home and then use that shirt to ride in the next day ... saves on washing a fair bit.

Sometimes I commute to work, drop off my gear do 30-40km and then comeback, shower and "get fresh". Obviously this plan requires bikeshorts and a shower.

all my clothes are hung outside on coat hangers to air them.

I bike commute every day except on Mondays cause usually I am tired on Monday morning and there is a group ride that requires me to drive to.

How far do you ride?
~9 Miles in the morning and then I go at least 20 home...I have so many routes from work it is great...I can go 100 or I can go 9 so it is how I feel...Tuesdays and Thursday I go long but easy...

How long (time) do you ride?
I ride about 150-200 miles a week that I record...so I am usually on the bike from anywhere 10-15 hours a week.

How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?)
I have gotten pretty serious and my goal is to try to race...I just started group riding and love it! Usually I try to do no more than 50% of my Monday-Friday Mileage on Saturday or Sunday...so it's weekly...or sometimes I just go easy during the week and do a long one on the weekend to compensate.

Do you have a shower at work?
No.

There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others?
I try to cool down for a couple of minutes...I am the first one at the office every morning and the next person to come in is usually an hour or two behind so I have time to stretch and cool down...I just wash my face and put water over my head to cool off...

For those of you that shower before you go and claim not to smell all day...do you sweat/smell a lot normally?
I shower at night but I don't usually smell normally...being that my commute is only 9 miles as long as I wash my face I'll be fine.

What do you wear on the bike?
Bike Clothes.

If you wear your bike clothes where do you keep them at work?
Hang them up on the bike.

Do you wear fresh clothes everyday so they don't smell at work and keep them in your desk or something?
I bring my clothes to work everyday in a backpack...I leave my dress shoes and socks here so I don't have to carry them.

What do you wear at work? Do you guys have shirt and tie (or even suit) jobs?
Not a suit job, but it is a khakis and dress shirt type of job and don't give s-h-i-t about stuff being ironed...

How important are you at work?
Not very...becoming more though.

Do you have your own office/cube?
Work in a lab with a bunch of other computer programmers.

Are you important enough that you can do whatever you want?
No but as long as I stay on schedule I can do what I want.

Do you ride your baby or do you have a commuter bike?
Bad weather = bad bike.

Where do you keep it? are there bike racks? in your office? cube? in a hall somewhere?
I keep right behind me...I was leaving next to me near another programmer but he kept putting his feet on it and knocked it over a couple of times (at least it was the beater bike)...I got p-i-s-t and moved it closer to me...it hasn't fallen since.

:How far do you ride?

10 miles each way, flat, 30 minutes with about 2-3 lights that I hit.

: How long (time) do you ride?

~30 minutes each way.

: How serious of a cyclist are you (how long is your long weekend ride?, how fast would you do an hour long ride?)

Pretty serious, although it's split between mountain and road ride. My average speed to and from work is usually between 18-20mph (did I say the route is FLAT?)

: Do you have a shower at work?

Nope.

: There's been the baby wipe alternative to showering. Any others?

Towel at work, don't change immediately.. Deoderant at work helps.

: For those of you that shower before you go and claim not to smell : all day...do you sweat/smell a lot normally?

I tend to shower the night before after the ride home. It is better
to shower before you ride in, but I leave early enough that it's cool
in the morning.

: What do you wear on the bike? If you wear your bike clothes where do : you keep them at work? Do you wear fresh clothes everyday
:so they don't smell at work and keep them in your desk or something?

I wear bike clothes, jersey and bike shorts. I keep them on my desk with a locked file cabinet keeps my drinks, and personal stuff for commuting, like pants, an emergency rainjacket, energy snacks. etc. oh and my sneakers, rather than bring them everyday with me, I keep sneakers in the drawer and change the bike shoes in the morning.

: What do you wear at work? Do you guys have shirt and tie (or even :suit) jobs? Do you bring it in a backpack or a courrier bag?

Jeans, t-shirt, no tie, sneakers.. I have an n'aero bag, but before, I have a Lowe Alpine 1700ci daypack.

: How important are you at work? Do you have your own office/cube? Are : you important enough that you can do whatever you want?

Senior Software eng. Shared cube, yes-flexible hours, relaxed atmosphere.

: Do you ride your baby or do you have a commuter bike? Where do you :keep it? are there bike racks? in your office? cube? in a hall
: somewhere?

Yes, currently, although I'm looking at a custom Seven to use as a race/ride bike. I keep my bike in my cube (Lemond Zurich)
