Am I pushing too big a gear?(8 posts)

Am I pushing too big a gear?Andy

Lately, my right knee has been hurting on climbing workouts and I think I'm pushing too big a gear. I've been cycling for 18 months so I'm not very strong yet. My rear casette is 11x23 and my chainrings are 39x53. Some of the mountain rides around here are so steep that my cadence drops to between 50 - 60 rpms. I know this is too low but I'm already in my 23-39 and I can't go any lower.

I've been thinking about putting a different cassette on my rear wheel but I don't know how much bigger I can go on the back with my Ultegra derailluer. I think the Ultegra group comes in a triple but it's going to be costly to convert. I guess it comes down to how much it's worth to save your knees.

A 12-27 will work with any setup and will make a big difference in the hills, but there are hills that even that won't be low enough. You should try to get a Ultegra 12-27 first, before you resort to more costly measures.

I would love to have a 32 bail out gear from a MTB cassette, but I can't seem to get that to work, even with a long cage Ultegra deraileur. May have to get a XT deraileur.
get the 12-27WadeOmatic

I swapped for the 12-25 and it's still a bit too much for the real steep stuff.

You can always go back to the "man gears" later.

Check your position too, but I know that i screwed my knee up with too big a gear. I takes forEVER to get over it. Do whatever you can to keep your knees happy.
yes get the 27johnrg

I went from using the 11-23 to the 12-27 and it has stayed on my bike for 2 years. I have a number of steep grinds and the 27 works well. Never even considered the triple.

I switched to a 12-27 earlier this year and it has helped alot. Lets you spin up all but the nastiest of climbs and then you can stand up and go up almost anything.
