I was wondering if anyone has experience buying through the classified section of this site. I occasionally scroll through and see some pretty good deals. I'm a bike addict and wouldn't mind buying a few used ones I see. However, I'm a little gunshy about sending money to people I don't know and I have heard not so good things about PayPal. Give me some feedback, please

I have sold a frameset on one occasion and a fork on another - I have also purchased a couple of things - generally, if the dollar value is low, I will do the cash first/paypal thing (unless I am selling, in which case that option is always good!) - if it's more expensive (like a frame) I use an escrow service - not a perfect option, but it offers a little piece of mind.

I've never bought anything through the classified section here, but I did sell a Bianchi Eros a couple of months ago through it. The guy that bought it from me used Pay Pal, and I had no problems with it. I was able to set up an account, and he used his credit card on his Pay Pal account and I was able to get the money deposited into my bank account through Pay Pal without any problems. I like Pay Pal myself. I think it's a great service. Of course, any time you buy something through a classified on the net, you're taking a risk, but my experience is that most people are honest. I've made a couple of deals this way, and never had any problems.

I've used the net for many different purchases and have never been burnt, one must practice caution though. I bought one bike of this board and it came through as described and am very happy with the purchase. I've also sold a few things here. Another option for peace of mind on large purchases is COD, but then it's sort of a pain at your end as you need a certified check at delivery.
Just curious, what bad things have you heard about PayPal?LAIrish

I've used it for a number of purchases through e-bay and never had a problem.

Check yesterday's classified for complete bikes there is a buyer looking for a seller that he evidently got burned by using PayPal. He claims he got no help from them. This is similar to other incidents I've heard of. I'm not versed in PayPal having never used it that's why I posted the question as I didn't want to make my mind up from a few second-hand anecdotes. It seems the consensus is it is reliable

Thank you for your help

What ever you do, do NOT try and buy the 2001 Trek 5200 From Nick Freemont listed in these classifieds. He agreed to sell me the bike and I immediately sent him the money via PayPal. He has yet to send the bike or responded to my numerous e-mail attempts. I have contacted PayPal to try and reverse the payment and am waiting to find out the status. If anyone has a similiar experience with this guy please contact me as soon as possible.
