When are 'new' models released and sold?Karch

I am a beginning cyclist, and am looking for a good buy on a bike. Similar to cars, bike companies come out with new models each year - allowing last years models to be put on sale, so that retailers can get them off of the floor - making way for the new models.
My question is, when do bike companies release the new models for 2002? And when do 'old' models go on sale? Anyone have a particular time of year which they think is the best time to purchase a new road bike?

Depending upon where you are in the country and season may make a difference. Here in the NE, the season begins winding down about the first of October. Not much riding happening about a month beyond that. Warm areas of the country seem to role season to season with little or no break. My newest bike was ordered from a catalog in November and I picked up in March. If you wait too long to find what you want in a better deal, frame size may not be available because they were bought up by the other people waiting on a deal. Also be aware that the profit margins on bikes are slim so 10-14%? less than retail may be a good deal. I would say September 1 and forward is a good date to bargain hunt.

to wait until after Labor Day for the killer deal, but the selection dwindles. Actually, the really killer deals probably happen in January or February, but by then the selection is nothing.
