|I've got a cross bike with 700X38 tires. I see road bikes with slightly narrower rims with only 700X23 tires. How narrow a tire can I use safely?|

|You would likely have no problems putting a 23 on your rim, unless it is extremely wide. This is unlikely on a cross bike, but possible on a hybrid.|

|As I understand it, you can use a 700c tire of any width.
The 700 refers to the theoretical rolling diameter of the tire although, if you measure it, it probably won't be too close.
The c refers to the width of the rim as in a, b, c, or d widths. For what it's worth, a 700d rim has a significantly smaller diameter than a 700c so there is no way those tires will interchange.
