Zabel wins stage one with no team support. I think it's great that he is riding well, and hope to see him win more to show Telekom he deserves a lead-out man. Here's to number six!

|Apparently there was a headwind finish and Zabel picked his spot patiently before we went all out for the line. He's a gamer!

God, the guy rides everything to the Spring classic to the Worlds. Only other great all around racer is Casagrande. I'd love to see him win a grand tour.

Although any sprinter is going to be better off with a strong leadout man, Zabel is the type of cagey, experienced rider who can pick a good spot and find a hole even without a leadout. He also seems like a nice man and I wish him the best of luck in his pursuit of a sixth green jersey. I'm hoping to see his young son's hair dyed green in Paris again this year.

but there wasn't an opening to go through so he drifted a bit to the right and came through in a heady bit of riding. I don't know what was shown on TV in the States but in the post race interview he made some concilatory comments about the composition of the team being focused on Ullrich.
Interesting finish as no team, except for maybe Domo, has a line-up for their sprinter and as a result the run-in had a bunch of people trying to get away as the pace, on a relative basis, wasn't like it normally is when the various teams with sprinters is driving the peleton.
