LBS recomendation in the LA Westside area.mk_42

I've just moved in to an apartment just east of Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles and I want to find a new LBS to call my own. I used to live in the South Bay and I know of a few shops there but I'm looking for something more local. Any recommenations?

Also, I'm a do it yourselfer. Things that I try there I'll buy there. But things like components I'll buy online and put on myself leaving only bigger jobs (like wheels) for the shop. So I'd like a shop that isn't openly hostile to that attitude.

I used to live in the Marina area and was a regular at Helen's in the Marina. I bought a bike there in '96 and was usually in once a week or so from '96 to '99, when I moved. I still drop by when I'm in the area. Helen's MDR is a road-oriented shop and its manager loves to talk bikes. I never had a bad experience in three years of going there on a regular basis. However, someone else who posts there has reported an incident of bad customer service. Based on my familiarity with the shop, I'd say he just caught someone on a bad day. The shop is on Lincoln between Washington and Venice.

I've also had good dealings with these folks. However, they do cater to the west side snobs and their prices reflect it.

I've also had very good dealings with Supergo.... albeit they're really an mtb shop.

YMMV JohnG

You're right that Helen's prices tend to be a bit high. However, they do offer discounts to club members. I always found the customers at MDR to be a bit more knowledgeable and less "west side snobby" than those at Helen's Santa Monica, where they have autographed photos of celebrity customers on the walls.
good call nmJohnG
