Moving to Portland - Where to live?(5 posts)

Moving to Portland - Where to live?mcbaker

My wife and I are moving to Portland and are looking for places to live. She will be working at Portland State, so that is a consideration. I don't know where I will be working yet, but I would like to have quick access to good road riding (mountain too, but I figure I'll have to drive to that anyway) without fighting the city too much. So, where is the good riding and where should we be looking? We'll be checking places out this week, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

There are a lot of great places to live in the Portland area. If you're looking for an urban lifestyle I'd try around Northwest 23rd (very hip!). Over in Southeast (the Vancouver/Ainsworth St. area) there are a lot of great older houses that had can be had at reasonable values. Still in the city, but more relaxed than the downtown area. There are a lot of great places to ride out east towards Mt. Hood. The light rail runs out to Gresham which is very close to Mt. Hood and a relatively quick ride into downtown Portland. The west side (Beaverton/Hillsboro) is very nice as well. Closer to the beach and a lot of nice places to ride. I don't think you can go wrong really anywhere. Be warned, housing prices are pretty steep in the whole Portland area. The farther you move out from downtown, the more reasonable the prices get. There are some pretty reasonable new homes out in the Gresham area (starting in the 140s - 180s) and I'm sure similar deals can be found out in Hillsboro or farther west. I actually live in Salem right now, but I grew up in the Portland area. Feel free to email me if you have any other specific questions. Good luck! Portland is a great place to live.

Hi Brian,
Thanks for the reply. We have looked in some of the areas that you suggested and have also noticed the steep prices in areas. We have not yet looked at Gresham, but that may be a possibility. How long is the MAX ride to downtown from there? I was not able to get your e-mail from your message - can you send it to me? Thanks.
