Ullrich won the German road championships over the weekend. Looks like he's ready to kick Armstong's butt.

I also still think Telekom is one of the strongest teams represented in the TdF. I only hope the ever present early race crashes don't ruin the potencial of a great matchup between LA and Ulrich.

He won the German championship, this is good, but its not the TDF, Think about it. Enjoy the spanking Jan is going to get!!

Whereas I do not discount the abilities of Ullrich, please know that a one day race without a lot of international competion and your team dominating the field does not come close to a three week tour with your team only one of many strong teams, going against a guy who recently showed significant domination without redlining. The race is no gimme for Lance, but he has a stronger team then ever and is in pretty incredible form. Anything can happen........

Now he gets to wear the German tricolors, which will make him easier to find in the peloton. Before, you had to look for the huge guy in pink!

But let's compare. Tour of Switzerland, National Championships. I wonder which one is harder to win?

I think we have summed up the favorites for the top two spots on Le Podium in Paris on July 29th. Who else will be there? Cassagrande, Beloki, Julich, Simoni?

This my friends, barring any accidents to the Yank and Heir Ullrich, is the real question. Any takers?

Julich? Are you kidding? Simoni isn't riding Le Tour.

Beloki and Casagrande are good bets, as is Moreau. I'm just hoping injury/illness doesn't take out any of the top 10 or so favorite guys.

A possible podium spot and my bid for new revelation if he doesn't have to kill himself for Beloki.
Julich? Really? What were you smoking?look271

While it might me nice to have two "Yanks" on the podium, the other won't be Bobby J.

True, the German Nationals are not the Tour of Switzerland. Then again, I wonder if Lance has peaked already. He sure has been storming along lately.

Ullrich is always on the tdf podium. Despite all the cutdowns from us world class riders here on this board, the guy is definitely a contender every year. He's taken a different approach at for training this year doing the Giro. Indurain used to do that and I recall he was pretty good at chocking up tdf victories. Telekom's acquisition of Livingston clearly had USPS worried. They ran out and snagged Heras pretty fast. He's arguably a better climber than Livingston, but Livingston knows Lance inside out ... Heras doesn't have the same knowledge of Ullrich. I think Jan is more of threat than ever this year. Plus, he's a likable guy. I'll be cheering for him.
The one day championship was just a demonstration...Maillot Rouge

of Ullrich's current level of fitness. Last year he had Lance worried towards the end of the Tour as Ullrich came into fitness and Lance was coming off the peak. Lance has even said that he has to put time into Ullrich early because der Keiser gets better as Grand Tours progress. Duh! it was just a one day race but we know Jan can go for the full Tour.

My bets for the third spot would be on Casagrande but I really like Moreau. I think we saw the best of Beloki last year. And Credit Agricole needs to realize that they have a better shot with Vaughters than Julich especially with the uphill TT.

we only have to wait for 5 more days to find out!!! I'm pretty excited, even with the criminal team (non) selections.

Not much of an accomplishment really, when you realize that all the best Germans are on Telekom. They had 13 guys in the peleton.

Actually, I hope Ullrich is in shape. Without Pantani this could be a boring Tour otherwise.

usps team and lance armstrong ; they the best
USPS and LA the best? Hardly.Largo

The TDF is a big event, granted, but it is only a portion of the cycling year, its just that in the US and Canada, that is all the media cover.
USPS is not there for the classics. They didn't win the Olympic road race, they weren't at the Giro.
They are not the best, they are very good, but not the best.
I don't think there is a "best" team.
Not there for the classics?mr_spin

Many people like to think that USPS doesn't think the classics are important, but they are dead wrong. Look at the results. 4th at Paris-Roubaix, 2nd at Amstel Gold, 1st at Ghent-Wevelgem, 9th at Flanders, 9th at Milan-San Remo. If there were the equivalent of the TDF green jersey for the classics, USPS would probably be wearing it.
you are dumbEvan

USPS the green jersey of the classics, bah ahahah aahhahhh lol, lmao, bahahahahahahah!!!! you are amazingly wrong, if the tour was slected only from early season results and w/o (cough) natinal bias (cough, cough) USPS may never ride it, Hinicapie is not as fast as others at the line, remeber when he let a couple of bottle carriers go on the attack thinking it was alittle nothing and that they would be pulled back, well, they won!!

USPS has a lukewarm early season, 2 wins, thats it. No stars and stripes on hinicapies back this july either folks. USPS only preps for the tour because their an american based team with all american sponsers and most 99.9999999% of america still hates bikes, but LA, makes people watch in July, thats it, thats the only time of the entire year 3 out of 4 years that a bicycle race is show and even on olympic years, the RR, TT, and track are all used as filler for other events, get serious people, no TV channel broadcasts the US champs, sea otter, Dupont (when it existed anyway) local TV never mention the state champion at the end of the local season, nothing get serious and move to europe!!

P.S. Lotto has had the strongest pre-season not any american team, remeber mercury Viatel might have just gone the way of Linda McCartney an Vitalico Seguros
National bias?look271
Jul 3, 2001 8:09 PM
LeFrance DeJeur belongs in the TDF? Yeah, right. If any national bias occurred, it was getting them in and not allowing Mercury in. It would have looked REALLY bad if 2 Yankee teams had come to the show and kicked european hiney, wouldn't it?

Granted Ullrich won the German championship, but it didn't have a dozen or so major cols in it. Did you see Lance in the mountain TT in Switzerland, it was amazing, the guy can climb like nobody else at the moment, particularly after a week or two of racing in his legs. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the head of the Lance Armstrong fanclub, and I would love to see Ullrich win the TdF as he seems so much more human than Lance. However Lance is such a dedicated athlete and Ullrich does love his food (I can relate to this!), so I think it will be 3 in a row for Armstroing, Ullrich second and maybe Heras third.
re: Uh oh, der keiser looks pretty goodEvan
Jul 3, 2001 3:06 PM
heras winn not be third, he has lance two think about and therefore he will be looking a stagewin at most. Casagrade has just had a month off because of his wrist and is now ready to make some euro's now that he missed on the magela Rosa, besides, casagrande can TT and climb very well.

BTW, if Ullrich wins it will be very close and be decied in the tt's, remeber that silver medal thingamaboby when lance wore bronze at 24 sec down????

We'll see what "Der Kaiser Roll" has to offer when the mountain TT stage comes around!
