|Handlebar clicking on 2000 Trek 2300D||rpicayo|

|I got this bike (Trek 2300) a couple of months ago and from day one it makes a clicking noise whenever I put uneven pressure on the handlebars. I sent it to the bike shop and they put some grease? where the stem holds the handlebars and it went away for a little while, but now it's back full force. This is my first road bike, but clearly this is not a normal sound. Any suggestions as to the source of the problem and a more permanent solution? The Trek 2300 has Icon graphite stem, bars and fork.
I'm doing a charity fundraiser in a couple weeks so having the bike in the shop or sending it to trek for a long time can't happen. On the other hand, I don't want the bike to fall apart either, and the noise is REALLY annoying while climbing hills in the drops.

|Had the same problem with my 2000 Trek 5200. While working on the stem to solve the problem, one of the pinch bolts stripped while I tightened it. Trek sent me a replacement stem in two days! Used it and no more noise. Unfortunately, the replacement stem was an anchor, it weighed 196 grams. I went to my local REI store and purchased a Ritchey Pro stem for only $35.00. It weighs 146 grams. Both the replacement ICON stem and the Ritchey stem emit no noise and are much stiffer than the original ICON stem on my bike. By the way, the original ICON stem weighed 162 grams. My suggestion is to replace that stem of yours as soon as possible because there could be a possibility one of the pinch bolts, like mine, is about ready to fail. Good luck with the stem and have fun on the charity ride!|

|Thank you for your response. I was just going to add to my original post that I noticed that the 2001 had two bolts on the stem and the 2000 (mine) has only one. If that one fails I'm screwed!

|If your bike is a 2000 model you want to make sure you don't have one of the stems that was on a recall. I can't remember if it was the 1999 or 2000 models.|

|I have a year 2000, 2300 Trek frame that I built up with the stock Icon bars but used a Deda Mercer stem. I heard some clicking but it turned out being the shifter cable housing tapping the headtube. Pulled them away from the frame by hand and problem solved.|| |
