Handlebar clicking on 2000 Trek 2300Drpicayo

I got this bike (Trek 2300) a couple of months ago and from day one it makes a clicking noise whenever I put uneven pressure on the handlebars. I sent it to the bike shop and they put some grease? where the stem holds the handlebars and it went away for a little while, but now it's back full force. This is my first road bike, but clearly this is not a normal sound. Any suggestions as to the source of the problem and a more permanent solution? The Trek 2300 has Icon graphite stem, bars and fork.

I'm doing a charity fundraiser in a couple weeks so having the bike in the shop or sending it to trek for a long time can't happen. On the other hand, I don't want the bike to fall apart either, and the noise is REALLY annoying while climbing hills in the drops.
