Is there anything that can be done about it short of buying a new wheel? Thanks in advance.

hops can be taken out by tightening all the spokes in the spot where the rim is out the furthest from the hub and loosened where the rim is closest. They should only be turned quarter or half turns depending on how bad the spots are. If you're not very good with trueing your better off having the LBS do it. TTFN

This operation will not work on rims that have really bad hops,, but if it is a really bad hop you can just replace the rim, the spokes and hub are fine, later

Thanks for the advice. It's not really bad, but seems to be a chronic problem. I'll try your advice.
