leg length discrepancy and correction question(1 post)

leg length discrepancy and correction questionken vining

My right leg is slightly shorter than the left (9mm). I ride speedplay X2 pedals and purchased shims to correct the length imbalance. When talking to the guy at Speedplay, he said to only shim about half the distance. The reason was to prevent one leg from becoming stronger than the other. I would like to understand this better. Can someone explain how and why this happens or point me to an information source on this subject. Just in case it is important for some reason, I am 6' tall and ride a 58cm Trek 2300. All of my riding is on flat ground (FL). Thanks, Ken.
