Im looking for a road bike and ill probably buy a used bike. But what is better, a newer bike with lower grade components, like sora or something like that or a older bike w/ ultegra or dura ace. thanks.

I would go for quality. Get the older but better "stuff" as long as it's been well maintained and is in fairly good shape. It almost always performs better and is less troublesome to work with.

Try to at least stick with 9 speed. Older stuff is hard to find.

|Check ebay, sometimes they have fantastic deals on used bikes that have very few miles. He might consider a Klein. Stiff, strong and light. I ride one and the al frame does no harm to my 59 year old body.
A lots of cyclist are former runners, including yours truely..tell him to go for it...
As an after though, most guys who start with a used bike usually end up buying a new bike down the road. He might save money in the long run by just starting out with a new bike to start with. Look at it as a lifetime investment. Make sure he gets proper fit. Sounds like he needs a 57 or 58cm frame.

You ride a Bianchi and your not pushing him in that direction? May you ears grow to be larger than the greatest Bull in Africa. Sereously sounds great. I would put him on a nice older steel Bianchi though. Lugged of course.

Used sounds perfect for your dad, sizing is the major problem. The last four bikes I bought were used and I bought them off RBR and MTBR marketplace pages. Not that there aren't good used buys other places, both local and on the net. I just found the best selection and easiest way to locate what I want on these sites. I think they're a little safer than e-bay cause it's only cycling folks, and pretty avid cyclists at that. Less likely to run into a bad experience. Your LBS may have some good used bikes, or know where some can be had, and he can try them out to boot. For under a thousand I think you can get more for less going used.
