Help! Creaking......(9 posts)

Jun 20, 2001 7:11 AM
I have an alu. frame/carbon fork (steel steerer) combo that suddenly developed a deep creaking sound when I torque the bars from the hoods. I checked and re-tightened all stem (threaded) bolts, inspected the fork and frame for cracks and found none. It sounded like a "carbon creaking" to me, and a test ride by a LBS employee agreed. I couldn't leave the bike there for more inspection, but does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? I am taking it back tonight, and I would love to be armed with some knowledge as to what might be causing this.....

You checked the Stem, but did you check?

1. Headset(Aheadset)
2. Shift Levers
3. Bottom Bracket

I there something I should know about the Aheadset? I sometimes have a creaking sound when I stand up. Tightened everything, including the headset, but it still keeps showing up.

Could it be the valve stem from my tube in my Rolf Comps? Or some BB flex?

Thanks for any heads up about the headset.

John, when was the last time your headset and bottom bracket were serviced? It could be something as simple as regreasing the headset and BB

It's a new bike Dave. Took it and had the LBS look at it. They've tightened/checked everything. I can't tell if it's a "clank" (like the chain hitting something) or a "creak". If I keep a steady line it doesn't show up as much when standing.

Thanks for the response.

my carbon bike had the same problem and still does sometimes but it ended up being the skewer in the dropout..tighten it down really tight and try again..also before that it was my kyseriums which were too loose..its probably something easy to fix but you havent thought of it

I also had that problem but I had attributed it to my weight.....
but what I did do after not being able to bear it any longer.....I took off my stem cleaned the tube and the stem....greased it and fitted it up back....not a creak since.

I would only hear the creak when out of the saddle and climbing .....and sprints
Hope that helps....

...try taking the stem out and putting a little light grease (or anti-seize compound) on the inside of the fork and on the quill. The sound could be the stem working back and forth in the steering tube.

You might also loosen the bar clamp on the front of the stem, clean things up, and reassemble.

Just tightening things up doesn't necessarily kill the noise.

...Turned out to be my hub -- needed a cleaning/overhaul. Also, the skewer thing someone else mentioned is worth a gander.
