|A good source, ( the best that I have seen) is the Cyclist Training Bible, by Joe Friel. If you read his plan, figure your numbers, set your goals and be realistic about them, YOU WILL IMPROVE AS A CYCLIST. You will not work as hard, be more efficient, and still improve on results. Plan covers a year not just a season, helps you peak for chosen events and gives meaning to your efforts, rather than going out and riding hard because you feel that that is the only way to improve. Good stuff.|

|A group of ironman triathletes were followed thoughout thier training routines over the period of several months. The surprising number of hours that they were averaging a week was somewhere around 15-16 hours. Each of them also finished in sub 11 hour ironman times. Pretty decent if you ask me.
It seems to be more of the quality of training than in sheer hours spent in training.
