Which bike to buy(1 post)

Which bike to buyeojhan

Hello all. I am researching buying two bicycles and would love some expert opinions (well actually I would love any opinion from someone with more experience than me!) Here is my situation:
My wife and I live in the Milwaukee area, so most of the trails we will be riding on are paved or crushed gravel. I would like to try some off-road trails in the kettle morraine area though, nothing too extreme, but I want something durable enough to take off the path when I want to. I understand that most serious bikers would probably have two separate bikes for what I want to do- a mountain bike, and a road bike. I can't afford that right now so I want something in between. I was looking at hybrids, but a friend (who does mountain bike) suggested I would be better off with a mountain bike with road tires. I guess I'm looking to do about 70% road / 30% off-road, and I want to spend 500-600 per bike (one for the Mrs. too) Some of the models I was looking at were:
GT Timberline (i liked the i-drive, but it was a little pricey for me)
GT Nomad LTD
Giant Warp DS3
Giant Sedona LX
Trek 7500

Thanks for the input. I also have one more question. My wife has carpel-tunnel and can not put much pressure on her wrists. Are there handlebars for mountain bikes (like the ones for road bikes) available that would let her rest her forearms? What are they called?

Thanks again.
