Hi. Was talking to a guy after a MTB ride, and he mentioned that he was a "category 2" road racer. What do these categories mean?

Just a curious mountain biker (and sometime road rider.)

Cat 2 is slightly below the skill level of Cat 1. I'm sure there are some USCF riders online who can give you the more detailed poop, but If I'm not mistaken you need to "place" in a certain number of races to advance to the next higher cat(egory).
Citizens class is often open to non-USCF riders who just want to try racing. Cat 4 are the squirrely riders who decide they are going to stick with it more seriously but don't have their skills honed yet.
WATCH OUT for them!

USCF riders (united states cycling federation) are required to race with a licence, for lawyer type reasons. New Riders are automatically category 5. ("cat" 5). You upgrade 5>4>3>2>1 as you accumulate points. Points are awarded per your placing in a race. Races vary, but generally they award points to the top 6. After 'X' number of points you qualify to upgrade. X varies between the categories (5 to 4 is 20 points, I believe). From 5 to 4 and 4 to 3 you can also upgrade by experience. Document your races, send this to the USCF district representative, and if the rep feels your 'good enough' he will upgrade you. I suppose you would need at least 10 races completed to upgrade from 5 to 4, etc. From cat 3 > 2 and 2 > 1, its by points only. My numbers may be off here and there, but you get the drift... That is what he meant by "category 2". (In other words, he's pretty damn good).

I alway's found it to mean: This is, of course, the politically incorrect, sexist and untrue version, but I alway's wondered,...

Cat 5 - Wife,

Cat 4 - Wife

Cat 3 - Wife

Cat 2 - Job

Cat 1 - Car
