|looking to buy a specialized allez a1 comp, does anyone know how much I should spend? I saw one for $1,799.00 is that a fair price?

|Depends. Positives: You'll be hard pressed to find full ultegra for the cost on any other bicycle. |
Negatives: 5 yr warranty and history of frame failures.
I ride a Specialized M4 and love it. However, my 2000 A1 comp snapped at the chainstay and I've heard of others doing the same.
Overall, not a bad bike but look around before you bite the bullet.

Specialized (in-store only) `00 S-Works M4 Road - $1,845 - If you don't live out west somebody could mail this rig to you.
I picked up a 2000 Comp + Flight Deck + Sales Tax for $1,328 in Sept 2000 from SuperGo

|$1799 seems to be quite a good price. I paid $1899 for mine in early May here in New York. I've seen it as high as $1950.
From what I've heard, the 2000 model was completely different, so it's not fair to compare the prices.
Pretty scary to hear about a frame snapping; that's the first I've heard of such a thing.
I've only had my 2001 Comp for about 4 weeks, but it's been a sweet ride so far. Normal growing pains that you'd expect from a new bike (cables needing tightening a few times since purchase), but I'm really pleased with it. If anything, I think it's an underrated bike. Full ultegra, carbon fork, good saddle, all-around nice components for the price... Not to mention, the bike, IMHO, is stunning to look at.
Go buy a matching orange jersey, and have a great ride!

|My snapped frame was a 2000 Spec. A1 comp not a 2001. I enjoyed the bike until the frame failure.|

|I like that. "I enjoyed the bike until the frame failure." That's like saying, "I liked my car, until the gas tank exploded."
Still, I'm relieved to hear that it was a 2000, not a 2001... I hope you weren't involved in a terrible crash as a result of the frame snap, although I can't imagine such a thing would NOT result in a terrible accident.
